In France, Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to one year of house arrest with an electronic bracelet. According to reports, the Court of Cassation rejected the former French head of state’s appeal in the wiretapping case on Wednesday, making his sentence of one year of house arrest with an electronic tag for corruption and influence peddling final.
Sarkozy had appealed against the conviction, for which he had been handed a three-year prison sentence and two of the years were suspended, but he is to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet instead of going to prison for the remaining year.The 69 years old former president, will be summoned by a sentencing judge to set the conditions for his electronic bracelet monitoring.
The decision by the Court of Cassation marks a historic first as it is the first time a former French president has been sentenced to a term of house arrest. Nicolas Sarkozy, who has always proclaimed his innocence, posted on his social media platform X has announced that he will “naturally comply” with the definitive sentence to wear an electronic bracelet but plans to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
