In a letter dated 11 January 2025 and signed by the 25 Roman Catholic bishops of Cameroon, the prelates, who represent the country’s Catholic clergy, sent “a clear and uncompromising message to priests, consecrated persons, the lay faithful and all other believers, politicians and all men and women of goodwill”. The socio-economic situation in Cameroon was thoroughly analysed throughout the meeting, which marked the 48th year of their annual seminar. The Cameroon government is taking an interest in the furnished apartment rental business. According to the newspaper L’Economie on newsstands this morning, the public authorities have recently shown an increased interest in this sector of activity. This segment of the market, which is often not subject to tax inspection, represents a major challenge for the national economy. An investigation has been launched with the aim of mapping all these structures, which up to now have escaped the taxman’s grasp and are competing unfairly with hotel establishments. The newspaper L’Economie reports on the subject on page 3 of this morning’s edition.

The headline in La Voix des Décideurs, available this Wednesday 15 January 2025, reads: “Tradex management: the onslaught of the conquerors”. Driven by Minister Adolphe Moudiki, vision to revitalize the Group’s activities on a continental scale, the November and December 2024 sessions of the Boards of Directors of Groupe Tradex S.A and its subsidiaries have paved the way for a new era of competent young people.

The Southern Interconnected System is going through a period of unprecedented disruption, marked by a drastic drop in hydroelectric production due to hydrological deficits and the impacts of climate change. Faced with this critical situation, the government is stepping up its efforts to minimize the impact on the population and ensure a gradual return to normality. Some of the actions taken by the public authorities can be found in the newspaper Le Drapeau.

This Wednesday’s edition of Mutations equally reports on the national electricity network, which is experiencing serious disruption ahead of the elections. Its front page headline reads: “2025 already in the dark“. According to the paper, the Minister for Water and Energy attributes the power supply issues to climate change and unpaid bills owed to Eneo. Mutations reports on measures planned to ease the situation.

What is the outcome of the 20 billion FCFA allocated to CAPEF for the 2023 agricultural season? In March 2023, the Chamber of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry signed a financial partnership with Compost and Yunus, for the sum of FCFA 20 billion, to be used to finance agricultural projects during the 2023 season. Several months later, but no real impact on the country’s agricultural development… This morning’s issue of Antidote provides some answers.

Paul Biya and the art of shock advertising“, is the headline on the front page of Expression Politique, on newsstands this morning. According to the paper, all it took was one firm sentence in the President’s message to the nation on 31 December 2024, in which he expressed his determination to continue presiding over Cameroon’s destiny, for people to raise their voices in disapproval. Although permissible under current constitutional provisions, the possibility of Paul Biya running for the next presidential election for the umpteenth time remains a subject of controversy.

After only two years of implementation, the World Bank is terminating the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend Project (Swedd) in Cameroon. Low levels of disbursement, poor management and operational inefficiency are among the reasons for this decision. Conjoncture Economique reports on this in today’s issue.

Since 13 January 2025, the government has begun disbursing the research modernisation allowance. This initiative, although beneficial for researchers in higher education, is giving rise to a feeling of abandonment and frustration among researchers attached to the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation, who feel overlooked.
