The Cameroon Teachers’ Union (SYNECAM) in their anger have called a general strike from 16 January 2025, paralysing the entire Cameroonian education system. According to a note sent on Wednesday to the Prime Minister, Head of Government, this decision was taken because of the government’s failure to honour its commitments on working conditions and pay. This time around, teachers are determined to make their voices heard.
Lebledparle.com presents SYNECAM’s memo to the Prime Minister :
Dear Prime Minister,
Syndicat des Enseignants du Cameroun (SYNECAM) informs you that, following the strike notice filed within your services on 06 January 2025, and in view of the government’s total refusal to resume the interrupted dialogue with the teachers’ unions as requested by the President of the Republic, it has decided to launch a nationwide general strike from Thursday 16 January 2025, which will last indefinitely until the teachers return to the negotiating table.
The reasons for the strike are as follows:
– The failure to adhere to the instructions of the Head of State who had mandated the continuation of the dialogue with the teachers’ unions concerning the consideration of our aspirations and our concerns.
– The government’s failure to fulfill it commitment regarding the announcement of the national forum of education:
– The lack of signature of the special statute of the teacher.
– The incomplete payment of the debt owed to the teachers.
The strike will be general and will affect all public and private schools in Cameroon.
It will consist of going to the places of service but observing walkouts while ensuring the minimum service.
We call on all teachers to mobilise and respect the strike to defend their rights and improve their working conditions.
YAOUNDÉ 15 JANUARY 2025.
