Samuel Eto’o, the Cameroonian football legend, has just been given the title Ntumfoyn by some traditional chiefs of the North-West region. The ceremony took place on 17 January 2025 in the North-West region and brought together a number of Fons from the region. He thus becomes the new Ntumfoyn of the region which translates to an ambassador of the Fons or a messenger of the Chief. According to reports, Samuel Eto’o was conferred with the title of Ntumfoyn by the traditional ruler of Koshin, a third class chiefdom in Menchum division.
For the record and unlike other reports, that suggests he was conferred with the title Fon of Fons, the title has nothing to do with Fon of Fons and it wasn’t done by top traditional rulers but by a third class chief in Menchum division. The video of the title conferment posted online has gained a lot reactions, with most people condemning such acts as well as the cap that was used to bestow the title.
With this grand ceremony, the former captain of the Indomitable Lions joins the large traditional and cultural community of the North-West region. It is a traditional title that he obtains after being elevated to the rank of Wambe Mbo’oh ku’ou in the Bandja royal court of the West region in 2023.
