Less than 24 hours after been given the title of Ntumfoyn, Samuel’s new traditional title is already provoking reactions from the public. A day after the ceremony, some Cameroonians from the North-West and other regions, were displeased at the coronation. On the Kola Sport website, one Cameroonian expressed his displeasure in a the comment section stating, “what has Eto’o done for the people of the North West region to deserve such recognition? How can someone who ignores the bloodshed our region has suffered over the last eight years be honoured in this way? These moments are being recorded and, one day, we will use them to demand accountability”
On Facebook, some of the comments share the same thoughts like that of Hervé Tene Mouafo who wrote, “Since the noso war… not even a word of reconciliation..not even from you” wrote this Internet user.
Another user on Cameroon news agency wrote, “A messager should know a lot about the tradition of his people so that when he goes on a mission, he’ll know what to say and what not to. How did he get here? Na third class sef, I can understand the circumstances.”
“The Fon has been manipulated to desecrate our tradition for political reasons. A 3rd class Fon doesn’t have what it takes to crowd someone on behalf of the North West culture, talk less of using objects reserved exclusively for royalty. On the other hand, I see Eto’o preparing the ground for his political exploits, he is moving around buying titles even from the wrong places making it looks like the entire people is in agreement. Just wait and see how he uses those pictures to represent the support of the North West in his upcoming imminent political campaign.NO to the desecration of our culture though political machinations. Shame 👎🏼” a Facebook user wrote. Like these social media users, Blaise Etongtek, in a hot editorial on the CFOOT media page, believes that Samuel Eto’o is moving away from the essential to concentrate on his own personal branding.
It is worth noting some sources report that traditional rulers from the North West region resident in Douala have disavowed the Third Class Chief of Koshin, after he conferred on Samuel Eto’o Fils the title of Ntumfoyn. To them this act is a desecration of their customs and demand that Eto’o returns these artefacts with immediate effect.
