The historic race, which began its first edition 1973, has attracted and continues to attract athletes and sports athletes from across the globe. In this year’s edition, over 700 athletes from 12 delegations will take on the challenging climb of Mount Cameroon, popularly referred to as the “Chariot of the Gods” and return to the Molyko Stadium their take off point within 4 – 5hrs. Participants from 11 different countries have arrived in Buea, eager to take on this race and test their endurance. In preparation for the race, more than 600 athletes have undergone mandatory medical screenings to ensure they are fit to compete.
With the region still facing anglophone crisis, and with the unfortunate events of the 2023 edition, where three explosive devices detonated, injuring over 19 athletes, security has been significantly reinforced as last year’s edition went on without any incident. Authorities have given assurance to both participants and spectators of their safety with law enforcement deployed to strategic locations.
The race is equally and avenue to showcase the cultural festivities of the anglophone region, providing full time entertainment and making the race and enjoyable experience for athletes and visitors.
For the 2024 edition, Nsabinla Elvis emerged as the winner of the prestigious race within a time frame of 4hrs 47 mins, and this year, the big question remains: Who will take over the crown? As the event is set to take place in some hours, all eyes will be on Buea to witness yet another formidable edition of this legendary race.
