Lebledparle.com has just learnt that there is a Schistosomiasis outbreak in Kumba. According to an official statement from the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Meme, the disease outbreak has been recorded in several localities such as, Tancha, Ntam I, II, III, Mahole, Mambanda I & II, Pung-Pung, Nshie-Nshie (Kosala II & V), and Pulletin quarters.
Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is a parasitic disease caused by worms found in freshwater sources. The infection occurs when people come into contact with contaminated water, leading to symptoms such as bloody urine, itchy skin, and diarrhea. The disease primarily affects children under the age of 14, who are more likely to play or bathe in infected water sources.
In response to the outbreak, the Prefect of Meme has urged authorities and the general public to take immediate precautions. They have been advised to avoid swimming, bathing, or drinking water from streams and rivers in Kumba to prevent further infections.
Despite this outbreak, officials have urged the population to be calm, assuring them that the disease is 100% treatable and that medical personnel are actively working to neutralize the pathogens responsible for the disease. He has equally called on anyone experiencing symptoms of Schistosomiasis to seek medical attention at the nearest health facility, to begin treatment.
As health officials continue to contain the spread of the disease, residents are encouraged to abide strictly to preventive measures and report any suspected cases to local health centers.
