The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will proceed with no Cameroonian représentation as the candidacies of Samuel Eto’o Fils and Seidou Mbombo Njoya were rejected by the CAF Governance Committee on 24 January 2025. Samuel Eto’o, who sought for a position on the CAF Executive Committee, was turned down, just as his compatriot Seidou Mbombo will not be pursuing a second term. For the former president of Fécafoot (Mbombo Njoya), the rejection of his candidacy was based on article 18 paragraph 2.C of the CAF statutes, which stipulates that: “No national association that is a member of CAF may propose and/or support more than one candidate“. Additionally, the former Fecafoot boss did not receive any support from his former federation for a new mandate.
While the rejection of Seidou Mbombo Njoya’s application is easy to understand, Samuel Eto’o’s case raises more questions According to sources from Lebledparle Sport’s, Samuel Eto’o was rejected due to sanctions imposed on him. In addition to the disputes brought before CAF, he faced sanctions from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association sanctioned Eto’o following the Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Colombia. Eto’o received a six-month ban from national team matches for challenging the referee of the Cameroon-Brazil match.
Samuel Eto’o will have to better prepare himself in the future attempts to join CAF in. But as a member of the executive committee, he will have to stand for a second term at the head of Fecafoot in order to be eligible for re-election.
