OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT COMMUNIQUÉ

STATEMENTS BY CERTAIN BISHOPS OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH REGARDING CAMEROON’S 2025 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Over the past few days, particularly following the Head of State’s end-of-year address to the nation, various reactions have been observed across conventional media and social networks. Among these reactions are statements from a few prelates of the Catholic Church concerning the presidential election scheduled for this year. While the Government recognizes everyone’s right to freely express their opinions within the boundaries of the law, it strongly regrets the intensity of certain remarks, which have disproportionately focused on the presidential race and are based on a flawed and exaggerated interpretation of the President’s statements.

The Government also wishes to remind all that Cameroon is a secular state where religious groups coexist peacefully and maintain cordial relations with public authorities. As such, there is no conflict between the Government and any religious group, including the Catholic Church.

Moreover, the Government reaffirms that Cameroon is a democratic state governed by the rule of law, where all citizens can freely voice their opinions on national issues. In this light, the Government considers the strong positions taken by some religious authorities on the upcoming presidential election to be mere speculation. These views are personal and do not affect the relationship between the State and religious bodies, nor will they influence the free choice of Cameroonians, who will make their decisions responsibly and independently when the time comes.

Regarding the possibility of his candidacy for the presidency, President Paul BIYA has already stated that he will announce his decision at the appropriate time. This declaration renders any further debate on the matter unnecessary.

The Government calls on everyone to respect this position and urges those aspiring to the presidency to prepare thoroughly for an election that the Government, alongside relevant institutions, is working to ensure is conducted peacefully, transparently, and fairly.

Minister of Communication

Government Spokesperson
