In a significant move to modernize Cameroon’s urban transport sector, the Transport Minister Jean Ernest Masséna Ngallè Bibéhè signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Songuo Motors’ Managing director Yong Bok Shi on March 13, 2025, held at the Ministry of Transport’s conference hall. The project dubbed “Cameroon Taxi Project” aims to introduce new technologically advanced vehicles while also boosting local vehicle assembly. According to the ministry the project is divided into two key phases.
The first phase will see the importation of 3,000 taxis and 5,000 tricycles to improve urban mobility. The second phase on its own part will focus on establishing a local assembly plant in Cameroon and once operational, this facility will produce an estimated 10,000 vehicles and 40,000 tricycles annually. This move is expected to create numerous job opportunities and contribute significantly to the country’s economic development.
During the ceremony, the Minister highlighted that the vehicles under this project will incorporate high technology, including integrated video surveillance for security purposes, electronic payment systems for seamless transactions, fuel-efficient engines to reduce environmental impact and they will be eco-friendly and cost-effective. An advancements that align with the government’s broader efforts to improve public transport efficiency while minimizing environmental damage.
Minister Ngallè Bibéhè did not fail to express his confidence in the project’s potential to revolutionize urban mobility while generating economic and social benefits. Songuo Motors’ CEO, Yong Bok Shi, equally expressed his gratitude to Cameroonian authorities for their trust in the company and reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing Cameroon’s automotive industry and ensuring the project’s long-term success.
It is worth noting that before the signing of this agreement, a technical assessment was launched in November 2023 to confirm the durability, maintenance and user friendliness of the cars. After a month, experts confirmed it had met all the requirements.
With this partnership, Cameroon is taking a bold step toward modernizing its public transportation system, fostering technological innovation, job creation, and economic growth. The “Cameroon Taxi Project” if perfectly done will represent a new era of efficiency, security, and sustainability for the country’s urban transport sector.
