The nation is mourning after a deadly ambush by suspected Boko Haram terrorists has reportedly claimed the lives of at least 15 Cameroonian soldiers in Wulgo, a locality in northeastern Nigeria near the border with Cameroon. The attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
According to multiple reports, the terrorists disguised as herders and traders launched the attack around 1 am on the Cameroonian soldiers stationed at the Wulgo post and the ensuing battle was fierce, leading to significant casualties among the troops. However, in addition to the heavy man slaughter of soldiers, Boko Haram militants seized heavy weaponry from the military base. The violent altercation left the area in shambles, with the military post in an unrecognisable states as several vehicles were burned beyond recognition. Reports equally indicate that trucks were seen transporting the bodies of fallen soldiers from the attack site.
This latest attack reveals the persistent security challenges facing Cameroon and its neighbors in their fight against this cult group. This insurgency conflict of over 15 years in the Lake Chad basin has led to the deaths of more than 40,000 people and displaced over 2 million, according to United Nations estimates.
