As the sole candidate in the race, Cavaye, a long-standing member of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC), won an uncontested election of 125 votes out 137 with 12 abstentions. In his victory speech, he expressed gratitude to the members of the Assembly and reaffirmed his loyalty to President Paul Biya, as he also pledged to continue serving with dedication.
Meanwhile, Senator Marcel Niat Njifendji has equally been re-elected as President of the Upper House of Parliament, the Senate. He won 87 out of 90 recorded votes, reaffirming his leadership in the legislative chamber.
With the re-election of both parliamentary leaders, the National Assembly and Senate are now set to fully carry out their essential duties which are legislating and overseeing government actions, in accordance with their internal regulations. Their elections didn’t come as a surprise to many but it has sparked several reactions on social media space giving their old age and frail health.
