On Tuesday 28th January, 2025, congolese citizens decided to organize a peaceful protest in the capital Kinshasa to support their fellow country people victims of war in the city of Goma. According to the Congolese press, the demonstration quickly degenerated into violence with incidents and attacks on diplomatic buildings. Among the embassies targeted was the French embassy, which the people accuse of supporting the Rwandan troop causing terror in eastern region of the country that has been a conflict zone with for more than two decades. By the weekend the country recorded a death toll of over 100 people including women and children, while hundred thousands of others were wounded, according to a count by the French Press Agency (AFP).
Despite, peace agreement that have been signed both by the M23 rebels and the Congolese army, none have been fully respected. As result, the humanitarian consequences keeps increasing, with large numbers of refugees and displaced person. The option of peace now seems to be a fairy tale in this part of the country as the key drive of the conflict are natural resources and mineral which they want to acquire.
As the violence intensifies Congolese civilians continue to suffer the unwanted consequences of the crisis with no clear resolution in sight.
