The Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM)has condemned a few media establishments for making unpatriotic proclamations and promoting hate speech and tribalism, particularly with the upcoming elections. In a communiqué dated February 11, the party accused CRTV, Vision 4, LTM, and Info TV of promoting ethnic enmity, likening them to the notorious “Mille Collines” radio that incited the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
A strong criticism was also leveled against the government and the National Communication Council (NCC) for condoning this approach to social division and made mostly towards a particular ethnic group and the party’s president Maurice Kamto. Members of the CRM are urged to walk out of any debates where tribal remarks are made, and the party has instructed its activists to monitor and expose any media figure propagating hate.
The communiqué urged responsible journalism, noting that failure to check hate speech could only ignite tensions. As elections draw near, CRM calls on regulators and media practitioners to uphold ethical reporting, ensuring it does not fracture the nation.
