The Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) is not out of the woods yet. Maurice Kamto’s party has just suffered another legal setback. After the Constitutional Council, the Centre Court of Appeal has now declared itself “incompetent” to force Elecam to publish the national electoral register as demanded by the opposition party, basing its decision on the provisions of the electoral law. This was followed by the Yaoundé Court of First Instance, administrative centre, which was also seized by the CRM and declared itself “incompetent” to decide on the case.
According to the CRM lawyers, the government joined forces with Elections Cameroun to keep the electoral roll from the public. “Behind the non-publication of the national electoral roll must be seen a preparatory act of electoral criminality. The Director General of ELECAM acts first, and others follow“, explained Mr Hippolyte Meli.
For the president of the CRM, the publication of the electoral roll is an integral part to ensure transparency of the electoral process. With Cameroonians set to vote for the next president in October, this setback is merely a delay for the opposition party, which remains engaged in a legal and judicial battle against state actors involved in the electoral process.
