According to the latest ITU report, Cameroon has made a major progress in the field of ICTs, ranking 3rd in the CEMAC with a score of 44.2 points. This performance places the country ahead of countries such as Congo and Chad, highlighting the ongoing efforts being made to improve access to and use of digital technologies.
The ITU’s 2024 report shows that the scores of the overwhelming majority of the 47 African countries surveyed have improved since 2023. Libya has emerged the leader the African continent with a score of 88.1 points. This marks an 8.7 points increase in just one year, catapulting the country from 5th to first place. This is thanks to a sharp rise in mobile phone and Internet penetration.
Cameroon’s performance
Cameroon has confirmed its advancement in the ICT sector by ranking 3rd in the CEMAC zone and 31st in Africa, with a score of 44.2 points. This significant progress, which places it ahead of countries such as Congo and Chad, is the result of sustained investment and proactive policies. The results of this ranking are numerous : improved access to public services, advancement of telemedicine and e-learning, acceleration of administrative procedures and creation of an environment favorable to digital innovation.
Gabon comes second with 74.7 points in this CEMAC ranking, followed by Equatorial Guinea (44.8 points). It should be noted that the Central African Republic was not ranked in the ITU’s 2024 report.
On a continental level, Cameroon occupies a relatively comfortable position ahead of ten other countries including Tanzania, Mali, Uganda, Ethiopia, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Malawi and Mozambique.
Scoring
The ITU ranking assesses the digital performance of 170 countries based on 10 key indicators, such as Internet penetration, mobile broadband coverage and mobile data costs. Each country is scored out of 100 points, reflecting its average performance across these different indicators. A high score signifies a high level of development in information and communication technologies.
In the ITU’s 2023 report, Cameroon was ranked 6th in Central Africa with 36.8 points, marking a drop of four places compared to its 2017 ranking.
