According to Egyptian media outlet a submarine, identified as Sindbad, had around 44 passengers on board when the vessel sank, with all passengers believed to be Russian, according to Moscow’s embassy in Egypt. So far, 29 people have been rescued, six people have been confirmed dead while several others sustained injuries. Among the nine injured, four are reported to be in critical condition and are receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
The cause of the sinking remains unclear, but the vessel went down close to the harbour. Reports indicate that weather conditions in the Red Sea were relatively calm at the time of the incident, while observations from a weather station in Hurghada recorded very light winds of around, with no low clouds and little wave heights. This suggests that rough waters were unlikely to have played a role in the accident. Authorities in Egypt and investigative teams in London are working to determine what led to the sinking of the submarine.
This tragedy comes just few months after a similar incident in November when a tourist boat, Sea Story, sank in the same area, resulting in 11 people dead or missing and 35 survivors.
