The National Union of Cameroonian Footballers (SYNAFOC), through its Barometer project, which aims to monitor players’ salaries, met recently to assess the state of payment in the men’s and women’s professional leagues. For the month of December 2024, the Guinness Super League (women’s football league) appears to be the only league to be meeting its payment commitments. According to the statistics published on Allez Les Lions website, the women’s football league achieved an average payment rate of 100%.
While things seem to be going better for the ladies, the Elite One and Two leagues are struggling to maintain theirs. In MTN Elite One, the player salary payment rate is at 25%, reflecting a 4% decrease compared to the last season, according to Allez Les Lions. Elite’s two rate is equally very low with the payment percentage of 5%, reflecting a decrease of 10% compared to last season. These Synafoc statistics show that clubs are finding it extremely difficult to pay their players this period compared to 2023-2024 season. However, for this 65th edition of the Cameroonian championship, club presidents have decided to manage their funds themselves without going through the the Fécafoot. The decision stems from accusations of non-transparency of Federation in managing state subsidy. It raises the question of what exactly the problem is?
