Former SGPR David Abouem à Tchoyi dies on his birthday

Born on 15 January 1944, David Abouem à Tchoyi, former Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic of Cameroon and former Minister of Higher Education, died on Wednesday 15 January 2025 in Yaoundé, due to a heart attack.

David Abouem à Tchoyi is no more! The former government clerk passed away on Tuesday 15 January 2025, at the age of 81, on his birthday. A native of the Mbam-et-Inoubou department in the Centre region, where he was born on 15 January 1944, Abouem à Tchoyi was a well-known figure in Cameroon’s administration. This former Minister of State held several government posts. In particular, he was Secretary General at the Presidency of the Republic and Minister of Higher Education. In territorial command, David Abouem à Tchoyi has held the post of Governor, notably in the South-West and North-West regions.

A distinguished career

His involvement in national governance began after excelling academically, earning a law degree from the University of Yaoundé in 1967 and a diploma from ENAM in 1969.

His career in local government was marked by increasing responsibilities. First at the Ministry of Territorial Administration, he steadily advanced and was appointed Secretary General in 1972. His expertise then led him to the posts of Governor of the North-West and South-West regions, demonstrating his ability to manage strategic areas of the country.

The high point of his career came in 1984 when he was appointed Secretary General to the Presidency of the Republic, before being appointed Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research (1985-1986). Until his final days, he continued to serve his country as a member of the National Commission for Bilingualism and Multiculturalism.
