Students, parents, guardians and Cameroonians at large do not know how this third term resumption will look like due to the ongoing tension between teachers association and the government. However, will issues be toned down?, because while teachers plan on initiating the strike action termed “école morte” in few hours, Grégoire Owona minister of Labour informed of that a Bipartite Commission was held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Yaoundé, bringing together representatives from sectoral administrations, religious and secular education bodies, private school founders’ organizations, and teachers’ unions under COREC.
According to the Ministry, the discussions led to the adoption of a three-month working calendar:
April 21 to May 21, 2025 – Review of the draft agreement by employer representatives and its transmission to the workers’ group;
May 22 to June 1, 2025 – Review of the employers’ proposals by the workers’ group;
June 2, 2025 – Tripartite synthesis meeting to be held at the Ministry.
The Minister highlighted in the communiqué the government’s commitment to creating a consensual legal framework for private education professionals and called on all stakeholders to act responsibly by suspending any strike action, in line with legal provisions that prohibit such actions during ongoing negotiations.
As of press time, COREC has not issued any formal response to the Ministry’s announcement. It remains unclear whether the planned strike will go ahead, or if the negotiation efforts will lead to a postponement. All eyes are on school resumption which will be in few hours to know whether or not the strike will be suspended and teachers will perform their duty.
