This national campaign comes in response to the recent detection of two polio cases in the Deido neighborhood and is equally part of a much broader effort to combat the disease across all ten regions within the Lake Chad Basin. During a planning meeting, public health authorities emphasized the need for strong community mobilization to reach the region’s target of 742,667 children. In other to achieve the target of the campaign, vaccination teams will be deployed to public spaces including schools, places of worship, and homes to ensure no child is left behind. To this effect, parents and guardians are encouraged to allow their children to receive the Polio vaccine to prevent health risks.
In addition to vaccination, authorities have announced that free medical follow-up will be provided for any child who develops complications related to the vaccine. There will equally be catch-up doses for children who have missed their routine vaccinations. The campaign aims to strengthen immunity among young children and prevent the resurgence of the poliovirus, contributing to the country’s long-term goal of polio eradication and ensuring a healthier future for children.
