Fresh border crisis between Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea is once again making headlines, as a large number of Cameroonians have been forcefully expelled from the neighbouring country. The expelled individuals, many of whom arrived in the border town of Kye-Ossi, recounted their horrible experience of being detained for nine days, during which they were subjected to torture and inhumane treatment.
According to several victims, the expulsion was so sudden and unprepared, leaving them no time to gather their personal belongings or reunite with family members. Many were separated from their loved ones and forced to abandon essential items such as mobile phones and working tools, but according to reports an operation is ongoing to facilitate the return of some of these personal effects, although the details remain unclear. These deportees have appealed to the Cameroonian government to urgently intervene, as more waves of expulsion are expected in the coming days. Equatorial Guinean authorities have not provided any official justification for these mass deportations, continuing a troubling pattern of targeting foreign nationals especially Cameroonians.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time such border crisis has occurred. Past reports have consistently highlighted the harsh treatment of Cameroonian nationals and other foreigners by Equatorial Guinean officers, often marked by violence, unlawful arrests, and abuse. The Cameroonian government and embassy are yet to make a statement in this regard as calls for intervention continues to increase.
