Before the recent decision, the age limit for Miss Cameroon candidates was set at 28. This limit has just been raised, according to a press release issued by Comica on 16 January. In the same document, the minimum age has been raised from 17 to 18. As stated by the press release, the new age requirement stipulates that candidates must now be between 18 to 35 years old. “This change aims to allow a greater number of young women to compete and represent the beauty, intelligence and diversity of Cameroon, the age requirement has been changed”, the statement by Comical reads.
Is it an imitation?
On social media, the new age change measure has not been well digested. Internet users are accusing Comica of imitating other beauty contests such as Miss France, which recently abolished the 24-year age limit. When contacted on phone by SBBC, Ingrid Amougou denied the allegations. She further explained “We’re not copying anyone. The extension came a little late, but it was to bring us into line with the standards of international competitions”.
This relaxation of the rules comes after a series of inclusive measures introduced in 2023. These measure allows young Muslim girls to compete with their headscarves on, and to decide whether or not to parade in a swimsuit. Additionally, girls with children over the age of two are now eligible to participate in Miss Cameroon.
