I liked the intervention of Mrs Tomaino Ndam Njoya, leader of the UDC, who directly presented the opposition’s concerns about the upcoming election and the demand for a consensual electoral code to the President of the Republic.

President Paul Biya, with his well-known composure and the level-headedness of which he is the undisputed grand master, replied that he was acting in accordance with the constitution of our country and that he was not doing anything that was not provided for by the fundamental law. After thanking her for her interest in the development of the country, the President encouraged her to prepare well for the forthcoming presidential elections and to work to ensure that peace reigns before, during and after the elections.

I was delighted to hear the Head of State address the leaders of the opposition parties present at the ceremony, which included the Honourable Bapooh Lipot, current SG of the UPC. Hidden behind Minister Ketcha Courtes, I observed everything with amusement.

Many of the guests who asked the President questions were actually trying assess the relevance and coherence of his answers. Some were left puzzled, most especially those who had confidently claimed based on who knows what, that he was no longer in charge but it was others, including his wife and secretary general of the presidency that were making decisions on his behalf!!!
