According to reports, the crash, which occurred in the afternoon of Saturday 25th January, 2025 involved 17 vehicles, including a tricycle. Eleven of the vehicles were completely destroyed by a fire that erupted after the petroleum tanker experienced brake failure, leading to a chain collision at Ugwu Onyeama, Udi Local Government of Enough state. The report confirmed that a total of 31 people were involved in the accident and tragically eighteen people were burnt beyond recognition, ten others sustained injuries while three other escaped the scene unharmed.
In a video that has gone viral of social media of the terrible scene, burnt vehicles can be seen as well charred bodies scattered on the road.
A statement signed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who led rescue operations alongside Enugu’s state Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, stated that the accident was caused by the fuel tanker ‘s brake failure. The FRSC used the opportunity emphasise on the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to road safety regulations.
The incident of fuel explosion in the country has renewed concerns on this récurrent phenomenon that has been attributed to poor state of the road, and non respect of safety measures or regulations with citizens calling on the authorities to enforce stricter measures and improve quality road structure to avoid this horrific accident in future.
