According to a witness, the tragedy began when the sister of the deceased called her, expressing concern about her son’s welfare. The boy, who was living with his late father’s brother in Onitsha, had previously complained to his aunt that he was not being well-fed. Alarmed by this, the mother decided to leave her village in Ebonyi State in the South Eastern part of Nigeria and travel to Onitsha with her sister to address the situation.

Upon arrival at her brother-in-law’s house, the woman requested that her son return to the village with her. However, the man refused, insisting that he would bring the boy whenever he deemed fit. An argument broke out, but when it seemed that the man had finally agreed, the woman’s sister stepped outside to wait for them, as the boy needed to pack his belongings.

What happened next was devastating. As soon as the woman stepped out, the man locked the door and attacked the mother and her son with a machete. The sister waiting outside was alerted by the screams of her sibling, who cried out, “He has killed me!” She tried to force the door open but was unable to. Realizing the severity of the situation, she raised an alarm to alert the estate’s residents. When the neighbors managed to break down the door, they discovered that the man had fled through the back of the house. Tragically, the woman and her son were already dead.

A manhunt was launched, and the suspect was apprehended the following morning. He is currently in police custody, awaiting trial. The bodies of the victims have been deposited at the mortuary, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

The tragic incident comes just few days after a man out of anger burnt his wife to death in Anambra state during their quarrel. One thing common with this two incidents is anger that fueled the culprits to react violently, to which people have been urged to stay away from hot tempered people.
