Cameroon’s U-17 Indomitable Lionesses will face Angola on 8 March 2025 at the Olembe stadium in Yaounde, for the first leg of the second qualifying round for the U-17 World Cup in Morocco 2025, Camerfoot Infos reports. This match marks the stadium’s return to official competition after three years of non-approval by CAF. Olembe stadium which has been the subject of fierce financial controversy, hosted its last game during the final of the 2021 African Cup organised in Cameroon in 2022.
Since hosting the 2021 AFCON final in 2022, Olembe stadium intended to be named after the President of the Republic, remain closed to official matches. Several CAF inspection visits deemed the building unfit to host matches. The glimmer of hope appeared when the stadium hosted the gala match between the legends of Cameroon and Brazil in December 2024. Now on March 8, the U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier between Cameroon and Angola will officially open the pitch after three years.
This match could be a test for FIFA to assess whether the building is capable of hosting future games for the Indomitable Lions. The stadium’s approval came in as a relief to Cameroonian, who do not want to see their multi-billions FCFA investment go to waste.
