Pope Francis makes first public appearance since hospitalisation

Pope Francis appeared in public for the first time since he was hospitalized on Sunday, receiving thousands of faithful people from the balcony of the Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome.

It was sheer bliss and joy for Catholic faithful who saw Pope Francis physically present at mass which is a sign that he is recovering. The 88-year-old had been admitted on February 14 after he developed bilateral pneumonia, a serious illness that raised global fear about his health.

After weeks of treatment which included breathing therapy, the Pope was discharged and took his time to bless and thank the throng that had gathered outside the hospital. Although his voice was still not robust, he expressed gratitude by uttering, “Thank you to everyone!” He also gave a thumbs-up gesture to the near three thousand who had turned up.

The Pope’s stay in the hospital has been an ordeal, with stories of the gravity of his situation being pointed out. Yet, while ill, he has received a outpouring of good wishes and prayers from around the world.

Now that he has been discharged, there is a general optimism that Pope Francis will gradually resume his papal duties. His public appearance from the hospital window was assuring the Catholic faithful and the world that he is on the recovery path.
