President Paul Biya hints at 2025 re-election amid mixed reactions

President Paul Biya subtly suggested the possibility of running for an eighth term in the upcoming 2025 presidential election. While he stopped short of making a formal declaration, his words conveyed a sense of continued commitment to the leadership of Cameroon.

In his New Year’s message to the nation on December 31, 2024, President Paul Biya insinuated that a likely eighth term in the presidential election of 2025 could be plausible. Without formally declaring himself in, he made sure his words relayed the intention of continued commitment toward leading Cameroon. “I have heard your calls and encouragements, and I remain dedicated to serving our beloved nation,” President Biya remarked, sparking speculation about his intentions to extend his 42-year tenure as head of state.

Divided opinions on another term

His suggested candidature has been greeted with mixed feelings in and out of Cameroon, with members of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement voicing unflinching support, as many urge him to contest, while others are registering a strong opposition.

One of the most vocal critics include Mgr Samuel Kleda, the Archbishop of Douala, who has openly advised President Biya to retire and allow another person to take over, citing the need for democracy. He went as far as to ask the President to ignore those urging him to stand again, underlining the need for renewal of leadership so that the challenges facing the nation could be tackled.

Yet, in spite of criticisms, President Paul Biya has tremendous support from his party as they believe, the experience and leadership he possess are important for the stability and unity in the country.

As the country prepares for an impending election, a possible candidacy by the president has remained a leading agenda of political discussion in recent times. His address in the New Year was very indirect, setting a very promising year in Cameroon’s political history, and be it a yes or a no to his candidature; the 2025 elections will no doubt test how true Cameroon is to her state of democracy, unity, and progress.
