Ten months ahead of the 2025 presidential election, Paul Biya’s candidacy has been shaking up Cameroon’s political scene since 31 December 2024. In his end-of-year address to nation, the 92-year-old Head of State, who has been in power for 42 years, expressed his determination to continue serving the people of Cameroon. A very disappointing message for civil society players, notably the bishops of the Roman Catholic Church, the heads of organisations and even critics such as Jean Calvin Aba’a Oyono, who believe that Paul Biya must “return to the village” in 2025.
Reacting to the news on social media, Abdouraman Hamadou Baba is urging people to focus on the essentials. He highlighted that “The question of whether or not President Paul Biya will stand in the next presidential election is of little importance”. “Whether it is Paul Biya or another candidate nominated by the dominant system, the forces of change will not be able to spare the efforts and sacrifices needed to get Cameroon out of its current predicament”, he stated, before adding: “whatever be the case, we have to stand against the manoeuvres of Elecam, the territorial administration and the Constitutional Council. So we need to be organised like never before, by showing great intelligence and resilience, while overcoming our doubts and fears”.
In his concluding message, Abdouraman applauded the courage of some bishops who voiced out their displeasure on the regime in power, and called on all religious leaders, Christians and Muslims likewise to invite their members to register on the electoral list in other to vote at the right time.
