The issue of unemployment and poverty among youths was highly stressed during the president’s traditional speech, reaffirming its gravity, given that the youth unemployment rate stands at 6.44%. In his address, he stated that the government is working hard to develop strategies and tools to reduce youth unemployment. “Several government departments are mobilized for this purpose, with significant financial resources allocated each year to achieving this objective”, he affirmed.

Part of the strategies according to the president is the contractualisation of healthcare workers, a point he referenced in his New year’s speech. “In the coming weeks, the contractualisation operation for healthcare staff that I announced at the end of last year will be launched. This will enable thousands of young graduates in the health sector to escape from insecurity and improve their living conditions,” he said.

While these commitments are quite promising, many young people remain skeptical, as such assurances have been made repeatedly in the past with little visible change. Every year, this same issue of youth unemployment is brought to the table, and promises of a better future for the youth will be sang, yet, year in and year out, fresh graduates struggle to find employment, often resorting to menial jobs just to make ends meet.

As the country moves through another year of economic and social turmoil, some of the youths remain optimistic but cautious, as one can’t tell whether or not the promises will finally be a reality. Only time would tell whether the commitments made by the government would bring about the long-awaited change or if the youth would continue in the endless struggle for better opportunities.
