A tragic plane crash at Muan International Airport on Sunday has claimed the lives of 179 out of 181 passengers aboard a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800. The flight, arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, crashed into a wall during landing, leaving only two survivors who are currently responding to treatment.
The two survivors, both members of the flight crew, were rescued from the wreckage by emergency responders. Though critically injured, they are reportedly stable and receiving intensive care at a nearby hospital.
Preliminary findings from fire officials on scene, point to bad weather and a bird strike (a collision between a bird and the aircraft) as possible causes of the crash. However, a comprehensive investigation is underway. According to Reuters, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the United States is collaborating with South Korea’s aviation authorities to determine the exact cause. Boeing, the aircraft’s manufacturer, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are also participating in the investigation.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and assured full government support, including temporary housing and funeral arrangements. International leaders have joined in expressing their sympathies.
In response to this devastating incident, South Korea has declared a seven-day national mourning period to honor the lives lost.
