The world governing body of football confirmed on Friday that it has initiated disciplinary proceedings against England players for racial remarks made the night before during a World Cup qualification match against Hungary.
“Football has initiated disciplinary proceedings in relation to the events that occurred last night during the game between Hungary and England,” the governing body said in a statement.
“FIFA would like to reiterate that our position on racism and violence, as well as any other kind of discrimination or abuse, remains clear and unwavering. We have a clear zero-tolerance policy in football when it comes to such heinous behavior ” it added.
The news comes just hours after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called on FIFA to take “firm action” against racist abuse directed at England players, calling it “absolutely unacceptable.”
“I implore FIFA to take serious measures against those responsible in order to ensure that this kind of heinous behavior is permanently removed from the game,” he continued.

England manager Gareth Southgate stated after the match, in which England won 4-0, that his players, including 18-year-old Jude Bellingham, “should not have to undergo this misery.”
He went on to say that while he had not personally witnessed the racial insults and did not believe that all Hungarian supporters were involved, those who were should not be excused. During his interview, Garreth was pummeled with ice.
“It is incredibly disheartening to hear accusations of discriminatory measures against some of our England players,” the Football Association of England said.
“We will request an investigation from FIFA,” it stated.
