In a press release issued on Friday 28 March, the US Embassy in Yaoundé issued a warning to Cameroonians who have obtained or are applying for a US visa. At a time when the United States has recently announced restrictions on the issue of visas for several African countries, the embassy has reiterated the importance of complying with American laws once in the country.

The press release warns of the potential consequences of non-compliance with these laws. “Visa control in the United States does not end with the issuance of the visa. We continuously monitor visa holders to ensure that they comply with all US laws and immigration rules – and we will revoke their visas and deport them if they do not,” the embassy statement said. The embassy stressed that holding a visa does not guarantee permanent residence in the United States, and that compliance with the law is an obligation to avoid visa revocation and deportation.
