Unlawful detention of civilians by authorities keeps on growing in the country which many legal experts and human rights advocates have denounced describing it as an abuse of power. The latest incident is the case of Cynthia Nama who is detained even though her payments have been settled. According to reports from Mimi Mefo Info, Cynthia initially repaid 120,000 FCFA of the debt and agreed to settle the remaining 70,000 FCFA. However, a missed payment last month led to her arrest, which her family has since paid the entire amount owed but she is still behind bars.

The same reports states that gendarmes at the station are allegedly demanding a bribe before they agree to release her. A demand that has sparked outrage from her lawyer and human rights defenders, who stress that her continued detention is not only illegal but also inhumane. One other disturbing fact raising concerns is that Cynthia is being held in a cell with male detainees, which is a clear violation of her rights. But all this is happening despite a release order already issued by the prosecutor.

Her lawyer is calling on the authorities to intervene urgently and ensure her release, as well as to investigate the conduct of the officers involved in this case.
