Today, March 13, the international community marks World Kidney Day, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the vital role kidneys play in our overall health. Globally, chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects an estimated 850 million people, with many cases going undetected due to a lack of awareness about early warning signs.

This year’s theme, “Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect Early, Protect Health Kidney,” highlights the importance of early detection in preventing kidney-related complications. In line with this, here are some key signs from Dr Chinonso Egemba that may indicate your kidneys are struggling. If you experience any of these, it’s essential to consult a doctor before it’s too late:

Frequenting the toilet too often, both day and night. If you find yourself urinating twice or thrice even when you didn’t drink water, then that’s a sign your kidney is finding it hard to water properly.

If you notice blood in your urine then it’s important you call the Doctor because a healthy kidney has a proper way of filtering blood and it won’t be seen in your urine.

If your urine has lots of foam that doesn’t go away almost immediately, then it means protein is leaking in your urine and it’s not a good sign.
